In order to grow, they need care

Planting is just the beginning. Trees need to be properly cared for in order to stay healthy.

It pays off to take care of trees

They are witnesses of our history, they give our landscape an unmistakable shape. In addition, they have a number of incalculable benefits! Trees provide shade, a home for all sorts of organisms, cool the surroundings, help retain water in the landscape or protect soil from erosion.

In order to accept the gifts of trees, we must take care of them, especially in the first five years of their life. It is the care of already grown trees that is perhaps even more important than the planting itself. This is one of the reasons why the traditional Tree of the Year contest, which presents the stories of tree giants and helps take care of them, is part of the Planting the Future initiative.

Trees also have financial value. Can you estimate the value of a mature tree? For adult trees, the financial value is in the order of 100 thousand crowns. Would you like to calculate it exactly for a specific tree? You can here.

How to take care of trees?
What do they need and when do they need it?

The owner of the tree should be made aware of any modifications to the tree. Any major alterations should be carried out under the supervision of a specialist!

watering

watering
    • Water trees less often with a larger quantity of water (keeping in mind any current climatic conditions)
    • Water with a watering can or hose on low pressure
    • Ideally, watering should be done with rainwater, the water has to be chemical free

Cutting

Cutting
    • At each stage of life, a tree requires a different type of cut
    • A professional tree cut is crucial
    • A certified arborist can help you with that

Protection

Protection
    • Soil compaction protection
    • Trunk protection
    • The protection methods themselves must not damage the tree

Year 0 - planting

INTENSIVE ATTENTION, JUVENILE TREES

0—3 YEARS YOUNG TREE IN THE ACCEPTANCE PHASE

watering

watering
Amount: approx. 40—60 litres Interval: approx. 8—10 times per growing season (ie from spring to autumn). That is, about every 14 days.

Cutting

Cutting
Foundation cut for establishing the architecture of the tree, forming the crown into a classic shape for a given type of tree.

Protection

Protection
watering bowl around the trunk, anchoring to 2-3 poles, protection against the taste of game, from the sun (reed / paint), weeding of the planting bowl.

3—5 YEARS OF ACLIMATED YOUNG TREE

watering

watering
Around the perimeter of the crown, not to the trunk. Amount: approx. 80-100 litres. Interval: approx. 3-5 times during the growing season (ie from spring to autumn). That is, about once a month.

Cutting

Cutting
Educational cut to remove damage and inappropriately growing branches, adjustment to the characteristic shape of the crown for the species.

Protection

Protection
Restoration of the watering bowl, removal of ties. Leave the poles to prevent damage (eg when mowing and sunburn).

BECOMING INDEPENDENT, ADULT TREES

5 YEARS, ADOLESCENTS

watering

watering
Around the perimeter of the crown, not to the trunk. We limit watering so that the tree gets used to natural conditions.

Cutting

Cutting
Educational cut to remove damaged and inappropriately growing branches, adjustment to the characteristic shape of the crown, creating an underpass height of 2.5 m and a car underpass height of 4.5 m.

Protection

Protection
Protection against soil compaction around the trunk. Removal of anchorages.

ADULT TREE

watering

watering
Watering minimal / none. It is useful only in the case of high temperatures, around the circumference of the crown.

Cutting

Cutting
Medical incision. Once every 5 to 10 years, remove damaged, dry or inappropriately growing branches. We do not interfere with the tree at nesting time.

Protection

Protection
Protection against soil compaction around the trunk. When moving with the soil around the tree, look out for damage to the roots (construction, plowing). Remember that the volume of branches you see above the ground is the volume of the roots hidden below the ground

AGING AND ENDING OF LIFE

senescence

watering

watering
No watering

Cutting

Cutting
Stabilization. Reduction of the crown to create a more stable thrust surfaces of the crown. We do not interfere with the trees at nesting time.

Protection

Protection
Protection against breakage (ties, supports), declaration of a memorable tree. Life support of various species of organisms.
